Just want to know whether I was correct - RegViews: 3188
Jun 21, 2010 2:24 pmJust want to know whether I was correct - Reg#

Senthil Nathan
I was travelling from Vadapalani, Chennai to Besant Nagar, Chennai. Two guys very professionally dressed boarded the bus at Srinivasa Theatre stopping. They were talking to a co-passenger in English and he was replying something as Seven hills and something else in broken English. He got down from the bus at CIT Nagar. During the end of the conversation I noticed that the professionally dressed guy(who is incidentally a foreigner) was trying to woo the co-passenger for conversion to Christianity. He succeeded in persuading the co-passenger to accept his card and asked him to call sometime after he returns form his trip to Tirupathi.

Now the rogue in me got alert. One among the two guys - the foreigner came to me and offered his hand for a shake. I was in no mood to offer mine. I said a Hi. And with that Hi he started to ask me whether I go to Chruch. I bluntly replied no but I go to temple. He asked don't you like Jesus and I asked him in return do you like Lord Muruga. Then as usual gave my grudging look and said him this is not to do your preaching. This is a public place and you can't market anything here on a government bus. (Am I right politically and by law in warning that guy on his attempt to preach his ideologies and religion to the fellow passengers.)

Meanwhile the other guy who later claimed to be an Indian from the northern part started to talk to a young girl and asking her the same thing which this foreigner was asking me. He was moving so close to the girls and if it was not in the name of religion such proximity would have been objected by those girls in a bus. Now I yelled at the other guy and told him also that this is not a place to preach and spread your religion. He got on to me saying Iam saying my ideas and you say what you want to me. I said there is no necessity for that. But he was dutiful in filling his contact number in the card and giving it to those girls (this act by all standards can be treated as eve-teasing). I literally shouted at him and asked the conductor to direct the bus to the nearest police station. At this point Saidapet bus station came and those guys got down the bus and went off..

Again am I right politically in my behaviour. Does law allow one to spread or market his religion and ideologies in a government bus in India.

Personally such acts of forcible conversion done by the Christians will create aversion among others on the religion and the people following that religion. I believe this can easily disturb the communal harmony.

I started to think the acts of people who act against people who try to go to home voluntarily and speak about religion are justified.

Does Christianity as a religion which claims to have the maximum followers in the world should go so much low to spread its ideologies.

1. there is no law against striking up a conversation in a public place and continuing the same between consenting individuals.

2. there is no law against striking up a conversation in a bus owned by the government (actually some transport corporation) and continuing the same between consenting individuals.

3. no coercive measures appear to have been employed.

4. to offer a card to any individual by way of introduction is a good mannered way to work and the recipient has the prerogative to do what he/she wishes with the card.

5. there is no recorded observation of any objectionable language or lewdness of behavior in the account presented. there is no record of any attempt to make forced physical contact either. offering a hand to shake is a very normal way to greet and befriend a person. there is no case for eve teasing here.

6. the best (good mannered too) way to deal with any person who wishes to engage in a conversation that one is uninterested in, is to politely say that the subject is of no concern or interest. add that the conversation is not welcome if one must.

7. whilst declining an invitation to converse, one may even add a small prayer for well being for all.

8. i pray for better understanding and goodwill for all.

@Mr.SF

If one approaches another in a public place again and again to preach his ideologies bu putting more questions even after politely rejecting to talk to him/her and literally throwing the card on to the other person even after the one rejects to accept the card.

When I say I have my own beliefs - Do you know about Jesus Christ. Then Why should I know. Why, dont you like Jesus? I don't know. Can I have your address so that I can come your home and have a talk to you? I think you stop here and Iam not interested in this conversation. Again, don't you like Jesus.

What should I do at this situation?

Senthil,

I had an acquaintance who tried to convert me. she told me, "I want you to go to heaven. Either your god can be right or my god can be. I KNOW MY GOD IS RIGHT."

I just smiled and never talked to her or called her or met her.

I was just irritated. I know.. Their sermon does not make sense to rational thinking. She was my friend's friend and acted as though she was trying to be nice to me.

I honour the feelings of Senthil and since the person also tried to use the same tactics with Senthil, his protesting is fine. But to ovedo the same and shouting to the conductor to take the bus to police station is overdoing.

Religion is one's personal feeling and noone underline noone has the right to interfere in this fundamental rights. The two persons concerned should not have tried their tricks of conversion to christianity with the bus passengers instead they should have addressed a meeting and conveyed their religious beliefs to those who are interested. We have seen in Orissa what happened and playing with religion should be taken very seriously.

PS: Senthil did you check up whether these two gentlemen purchased the tickets.?

Anu , Pathway Inc too promises reservation in heaven after death but we take anyone without any bias. Willingness and small efforts are the only criteria we demand. Even Charu, who does not believe in heaven or hell, we can offer a seat if he is ready to shell out our cost.

LK(g) you are right that people should not try to impose themselves and their thoughts on others . . . . but what they did was not outside the law and hence not worthy of being considered a cognizable offense . . . . therefore the police station matter is more than overdoing - legally it can be considered an attempt to divert a public utility transport service to a destination other than routed and therefore tantamount to hijacking . . . what if there was a lady in a state of impending labor who would have been forced to give birth to a bonny cute baby in the bus?

I am wondering whether any of the contributories to the philosophical queries of SF junior relevant. He has knowledge of one super power, who had a wife at home and chased a girl from the hunter family and his brother who had an elephant head helped him in eve-teasing. The guy or guys who annoyed him in the bus believed more in a man who had an affair with a prostitute while He himself was born without initials like a test tube baby.

I do not know much about the legalities presented by SF senior. Law is very useful to punish somebody. I have been a lawyer for 30 years without putting it to any other use. I have great respect for Prophet Mohamed who had the wisdom to listen to Lady Fatima and have little respect for the people who bring shame to his name by their killings.

I can understand the reaction of LKjee who holds SF juniors’ flag aloft, for some believe in meditation more than logic. Please forgive my intolerance for I may die wrong in an year and you may live “right” from there on.

@Charu Sir,

Those points were eye opening.

But my point is, is it legal to engage in religious conversion in a public bus. Am I politically and legally correct to object for that act.

If this is correct then why can't I market my products in a bus. Why am I asked to pay money to advertise my products in a public bus?

Charu Sir,

For me religion is nothing but collection of customs and practices that evolved uniquely specific to the region based on various factors like weather, natural resources available and other geographical and natural factors. It should keep on evolving as we face changes in nature and in human daily. And GOD is no one but local heroes (humans) who either excelled others in valour or in kindness or in something mostly doing good. While believing in Muruga, Shiva, Vishnu, Sakthi, Jesus, Allah, Buddha I respect and pray my local Gods Mariamman, Iyyanar who are none but local heroes in that area later referred by common names. I do pray to my grandfather and grandmother the same way as I do to the other GODS, for they are GODS specific to my HOME. All my rational thinking on religion and GODS lead me to nowhere except this conclusion.

Conversion by enticement, brain washing, misuse of religious freedom are all done by christian fanatics only.

I do not think that a person or group of persons should be allowed to enter a bus and market christianity.

We do not need a gora to educate us about any assumed superiority of their God over ours.

We are happy with our beliefs or non-beliefs and it is really amusing to note a Gora trying to educate us on religion which is like Osama bin laden teaching Ahimsa.

I agree with Senthil that passengers should not be disturbed in a travelling bus even if they are begged to change their religious beliefs.

I also pray that we see the ulterior motives of the person indulging in conversions.

"I do not think that a person or group of persons should be allowed to enter a bus and market christianity."

this is like a wish list. i shall not judge on whether it is good or correct or both.

the original question about the legality is honestly answered by opinion, surmise, conjecture and wishes.

the fact remains that it is not illegal to offer a address card to a lady on a bus.

A person who is strong in his belief would not be withered by others. In my case, while standing jn a bus stop in Singapore, a student approached me. He asked, am I a christian. I said No. The next question he asked me was "Do you believe in Jesus?" . Having gone through these sermons several times, I asked him whether he was a christian. He said yes. I asked him the second question , "DO you believe in Jesus?". He looked puzzled. My answer to him was, as a non christian it is immaterial if I believe in Jesus or not. But he being a christian should believe in Jesus. The conversation ended there.

A person who is blindly believing in his religion fails as well. Two episodes in the life of Adi Shankara highlights this. One when in Kasi, he asks a undertaker to not show his feet to the god,to which the undertaker asks him where is a direction that has no god so that he can stretch his leg towards that direction. The second time when he debates the debate turns to married life. The lady of the house questions AdiShankara what experience he has to debate on that subject.

That is my question? If Christianity can be marketed in a govt bus without any money, then why we charge for displaying billboards in buses. If people can talk to us for conversion, what is wrong in people can come on board in buses and ask for money(Begging) Why this is termed as illegal? Is this because they doenst have someone to explain themsleves to the virtual leader of the state who can better understand what it meant by preaching christianity in buses but not begging.

-Senthil

@Mr.Ganesh

" Do You believe in Jesus?". That is interesting. That shows your smartness. But Iam a kind of dull and dumb and also blunt guy.

But the Adi Sankara story, is it not the same as Avvayar with Murugan story we have in tamil epics regarding the fact God is everywhere.

this leaves it open to examine many diverse viewpoints (possible with an open mind) . . .

pathway archives can add more light on this very important subject i believe . . .

some believe that one of the greatest acts of the sages of yore was to live a life of renunciation striving for moksha as wandering ascetic mendicants by living of bhiksha on their way to samadhi . . . . the better endowed can seek atonement and spiritual uplift by feeding such seekers . . .

btw - interestingly, The Bombay Prevention of Begging Act, 1959, which was adopted by Delhi about 45 years ago, in 1960 has no cases registered under its provisions till recorded in 2005 . . . . so society is probably apathetically inclined to look at begging as an offense though classified as one under law where enacted and applicable . . . in 2007 in a concerted drive beggers in score were rounded up all over Delhi in a supposed bid to give the city a face lift for the oncoming Commonwealth Games . . . http://www.expressindia.com/latest-news/Delhi-jails-beggars-to-look-modern/249489/

i do not know of any anti beggary law in Tamil Nadu though . . . see this picture - http://wapedia.mobi/en/Beggar
Children in Tamil Nadu, India, begging in front of a Catholic Church on Sunday 27 February 2010

i have a very simple question here now . . . is it against any law of any land to offer to feed the hungry and the impoverished . . . food? knowledge? character? spirituality?

You tend to oppose my views always. I don't know why. I don't know how come a much learned and much informed person like you was not informed about the anti-begging drive initiated by the Chennai Corporation. The corporation takes away the beggars from the roads of Chennai forget about they getting into the govt buses to beg.

Offering one with money and food is not at all an offence not even asking for it is an offence. If this is so then why make it an offence with the penal codes.

And regarding the sages doing service to God by roaming, these so called Christian sages are paid by the institutions with vested interest to roam in the buses and to enter into the household to market their religion. Please don't ever say that you are not aware of this. And the sages roam in woods.

As far as child labourers are considered, I hope that was not to my original discussion.

FACT #1 - i do not oppose your views or anybody's views (unless the views contain direct unsubstantiated allegations against me or mine - if that is so then i plainly state my objection and concerns for all to know my position).

FACT #2 - i present my views on an open forum intended for presentation of views.

FACT #3 - i ask questions and raise concerns that help induce people to think of other viewpoints to create a healthy discussion amongst open minded people.

FACT #4 - i read other viewpoints and respond by replying, ignoring, introspecting, contemplating, concluding/inferring and praying.

FACT #5 - i shall not tire of pointing out to you and shall not ignore silently whenever you accuse me wrongly of any act of omission or commission that i have not performed.

i do not know of any shastras that limit the roaming privileges of any sages confining them to the woods.

i do not know why there should be any discrimination between sages following differing beliefs to finally reach the same destination using the same pathway.

i do know about the ANTI-begging drive initiated by the CMC. i do not know why there should be anything ANTI in the world. i am a passionately ANTI-ANTI person.

does the beggar violate any law enforceable in Chennai by begging? if he does not then why does the CMC curtail his freedom and whisk him away? maybe actually his offense is something other than begging and the public is being incorrectly informed about the reason for taking him away by force.

and if one does not wish to make offering and receiving any good thing an offense then why does one complain about it at all?

about child labor - i raised the question to focus discussion towards examining a very intimately connected concern that does impact begging . . . imagine if those children were not to find gainful employment then would they not beg for their needs? i beg patience of every reader so that the issues can be clearly dissected for better understanding.

whenever i see any prevailing confusion i participate enthusiastically . . .

Roaming of sages is not restricted anywhere when I find them even on the streets of Chennai. Sages are from all ideologies.

But as a sage what we have seen closely, he doesnt come to you and tell you about his religion and practices. There is a difference in a roaming sage and purposeful marketers of christianity with vested interest.

About child labour - I hold the same view. If they were stripped of the jobs what they are holding now by law, who will support their families financially. Alternatives can be thought off but not making them jobless. I applaud the rulers of TamilNadu for bringing in the mid-day meal scheme to bring the poorest of the poor to the school atleast for the morning session. Something of that sort has to be thought by the policy makers to ensure these child labours being the sole bread winners for their families dont loose their jobs but also learn and also some fun meant for their ages.

Soeb Anna ,this is being done by all religions some on festivals ,early morning /afternoon and some on sundays.
We need to enforce the rules of noise pollution uniformly for all of them.

In reality the vote bank politics played by politicians is only for appeasement of minority religions only.

In my school days i was taught that India is a secular country.

Today secular in India is a different meaning.

I had a recent forwarded mail by an elder Delhi friend. It says

India is famous for saints like Adi sankarara, Vivekananda, Sai baba Shiridi etc. But no Indian Governments has so far released a single rupee note or a 10 paise coin in their name. Not even in Hindu Gods. But present UPA government released 5 rupees coin depicting Saint Alphonsa birth centenary in 2009.

Where are we going?

Even thinking about power by the native minorities in the neigbouring island country is a crime.
Even building a small temple in our north western neighbouring muslim country is not allowed. Minority sikhs are always torchered there by the majority muslims. A chiristian cricket player was debarred and not allowed to play until he got converted to muslim.

But being a secular state India now released a christianity oriented lady's image in 5rs coin.

Senthil i too once got a co passenger in the same governement bus while i was studying. That gentleman asked about me and he said he is a true christian and started preaching the ideology of the religion. But i simply cut the topic by saying i am a non believer of God although i was not. Some times we must be very smart otherwise we need to lose our cool.

Mr. SF senior
its a type of religious identity. One religion puts music for 24 hours loudly, in other the preacher shouts for his life and preaches, In another the same loud speaker shouts their religious people to call for a prayer. So one shouts for 24 hours and stops, next shouts for some times and stops till the next prayer, the other one shouts at regular intervals in a day.

But not in the month of Ramzan nor the sunday Alley looyahhh sounds...But very much the Ganesh Chathurthi speakers...I had made a temple in my street to remove the loud speakers and restrict it only to the temple instead of the three adjoining streets. This I consider as my success. If someone from the other religions also think and start correcting themselves I would be happy for it.

Beggar who gave alms to the poor
27 Jun, 2010 0036hrs IST TNN[ Radha Sharma ]

AHMEDABAD: A beggar on Saturday proved that charity only needs a big heart rather than deep pockets. Khimjibhai Prajapati, 64 and a beggar in Mehsana for a decade, donated clothes to 11 poor hearing and speech-impaired girls at the Shrimati Kesarbai Kilachand School for the Deaf.

Rich philanthropists have been a more common sight but it was the first time ever that a beggar had walked into the school to share his savings. It was an unusual sight. An unkempt Khimjibhai in tattered, unwashed clothes, limped through the school gates on crutches and placed the brand new clothes in the hands of 11 eager girls. He had used his savings of Rs 3,000 to buy the clothes.

Khimjibhai begs outside the Simandhar Swami Jain Temple in Mehsana and outside the Hanuman Temple. He lives nearby and asks the devotees for alms.

So why did he give alms to the unfortunate children at the school? Khimjibhai said, "I just need two meals a day and some money to send back to my ailing wife in Rajkot to cure her ulcers and lung infection. Apart from this, whatever I earn I use to buy food for poor, hungry people. Since a long time I wished to do something for girls and I am happy to donate for them".

Khimjibhai used to run a tea stall in Rajkot but escalating prices and shrinking profit margins wreaked huge losses and left him on the streets.

His faith in God brought him to Mehsana where he took shelter outside the Jain temple. "Whether rich or poor, one should always try to help the needy," he says. Khimjibhai helped an orphanned girl marry some time ago.

Bharat Shah, a trustee of the institution that runs the school, said, "I have never seen such philanthropy in the 35 years of career. He just goes on to prove that the true donor is he who has one roti and shares half with the hungry."

One of those who received clothes was Swati Bhagwandas, an orphan who has been at the residential school for years. The 18-year old's eyes shone with happiness.
